About Yohanes Kabes
Yohanes Kabes is a young and talented author from Papua, Indonesia. He was born on April 7, 1997, in Wayati Village, Fakfak, Papua. Raised primarily by his grandmother, Priska Mendopma, he developed an early interest in literature. From a young age, he was drawn to writing and began crafting poems and prose lyrics while in elementary school. However, it was during his senior high school years that he began to venture into short story writing, though these early works were not publicly shared.
Despite a humble start, Yohanes’s passion for storytelling grew over time, and he decided to pursue writing more seriously. He soon began to make his mark in the literary community, particularly with the publication of his debut novel Six Hours in 2023. Before this, in 2018, he co-authored the book Hujan Kabut & Catatan Kecil Tentang Hati with Wiama Bali, which was published under the pen name Johanz Kabes Valkason. This marked his early entry into the world of published authorship.
Yohanes also participated in collective works, including the poetry anthology Everything Inside Part 01, which was a collaboration with 14 young Papua writers. This project came about as part of a writing program by students of the University of Papua and was a testament to his active involvement in promoting local talent and voices.
His debut novel, Six Hours, is a thrilling mystery that explores the mysterious death of a writer and editor named Mawar Jelita, whose death is linked to a peculiar mark resembling the number six. The book blends supernatural elements with suspense, creating an engaging narrative that has captivated readers. The novel has been praised for its fast-paced storytelling, though its ending leaves readers with lingering questions, encouraging deeper reflection.
In addition to his writing, Yohanes has a strong presence on social media, where he connects with his audience and shares insights about his writing journey. His growth as an author and his contributions to contemporary literature, especially in his home region of Papua, highlight his potential as a future literary figure in Indonesia.
